Handcrafted Books About Palestine

Andaleeb Cartonera is an independent cardboard book press born in Madison, Wisconsin (U.S.) in 2024. Our project is inspired by Latin-American cartoneras, small alternative publishers that produce low-cost, handcrafted books using recycled cardboard.
We seek to pay tribute to the endurance of the Palestinian people, the spirit of righteous protest and solidarity embodied by the university encampments in Madison and throughout the U.S., and the worldwide movement that rose in opposition to genocide in Gaza.
Andaleeb Cartonera believes in the power of the written word to spread knowledge and awareness about the Palestinian cause. We will keep raising our voices for a liberated Palestine free from apartheid and occupation and will continue to support those who speak truth to power.

Our Books
Within a year, our catalogue has reached more than 80 titles, thanks to authors, compilers, or organizations who generously gave us permission to publish their work (already available online) to continue spreading awareness about Palestine and to denounce the genocide in Gaza.
Andaleeb Cartonera‘s books are free of charge and not for resale. They are displayed at A Room of One’s Own bookstore, you can come across them in various Little Free Libraries in Madison, and if you attend any of our bookmaking workshops, you can keep the book you make there.
We have donated books to The New York Public Library, the Islamic Lending Library of the Muslim Women’s Coalition in Wisconsin, the UW Archives and Records Management, the Wisconsin Historical Society, the Small Press Library at the Arts+Literature Laboratory, the Comics Room, and a few Madison school libraries.
We are constantly publishing new titles about Palestine, written by Palestinians and by supporters of the Palestinian cause. If one of Andaleeb Cartonera‘s unique, handcrafted books falls into your hands, be kind to it, read it, and share it. We must keep talking about Palestine, now more than ever!

Our free workshops take place twice a month at Madison Friends Meeting, and the independent bookstore A Room of One’s Own. Additional workshops are organized in different venues too. You don’t need to be an artist to participate. Everybody is invited to make covers for our books!
Cardboard and art supplies are always provided, and you can take with you one of the books you make in the workshop.
